About the check Sole proprietorship or BV?

This check compares a Dutch sole proprietorship (eenmanszaak) with a BV, calculated with what you need privately. Most calculators assume you take out all the profit; we ask what you really need, and that changes the outcome. You see the difference in two numbers: tax, and after the extra costs of a BV. What stays in the BV is deferred tax and is shown separately. "Stay a sole proprietorship" or "first consider another way of working" can also be the outcome. You see your result straight away; the full advice report comes free by email.

For anyone with a sole proprietorship who is unsure about a BV, and for anyone still starting who wants to know which form fits.

Calculated with the 2026 Dutch tax rules and rates of the Belastingdienst (Dutch Tax Administration). A few rules change in 2027; the outcome is an indication based on your answers.

Questions we often get

From what profit is a BV worth it?

There is no fixed amount. It depends mainly on how much profit you can leave in the BV, the salary you have to pay yourself as director-shareholder and the extra costs of a BV. The check calculates it with your figures.

My client no longer wants freelancers. Does a BV solve that?

No. Whether your work is really employment depends on how you work, not on your legal form. The check shows what a BV means for you financially, apart from that question.

What does a BV cost extra?

A BV has its own costs: incorporation at the notary, annual accounts, a second tax return and payroll for yourself. The check includes those costs in the difference.

I have not started yet. Can I still do the check?

Yes. Fill in what you expect to earn and what you need privately. The check shows which form fits.
