What it is about
If you have been in business for a few years, you have usually found a rhythm. The question is whether that rhythm still adds up. Do you know every month what you keep, or do you only notice at your tax return?
With a sole proprietorship or partnership (eenmanszaak, vof) you pay income tax on your profit. What you keep depends on your business costs, the entrepreneur's deduction (ondernemersaftrek) and your other income, among other things. So your revenue is not the same as your spendable income. With a BV, the BV pays corporate income tax and you get a salary; there it is about the balance between salary, dividend and the profit that stays in the BV.
You also need to keep VAT (btw), your provisional assessment (voorlopige aanslag) and financial reserves in mind. By setting enough money aside during the year, you avoid a tax payment unexpectedly squeezing your cash. And before 31 December you can often still arrange something, for example with investments and deductions.
Do not forget your financial security either. As a freelancer you are usually responsible yourself for disability cover and your pension. A suitable buffer helps you get through periods with less income.
Running a business well is not about growing. Staying here is no worse than growing further. It is about peace of mind: knowing your numbers add up and that you do not pay more tax than necessary.
With the StartAndGrow tools you work through these topics and see whether your current choices still suit your situation.
